When we used to do cooking with the Boy Scouts, we learned pretty quickly that an untried dutch oven recipe at a campout was a recipe for disaster.

So if we were going to use a new recipe, we tried it out in a dutch oven in our kitchen oven. Using coals/briquettes inside is just stupid, so don't do that.

A word of caution though: using a cast iron in your oven isn't the same as using coals or briquettes to cook. The real upside to cooking in your kitchen oven is that you don't have to fight off hungry scouts for your share of the supper.
